Journalists on a Journey: Towards Responsible Media on Transgender Participation in Sport

This paper draws upon interviews to reveal how a small minority of journalists are working towards more ethical approaches representing transgender participation in sport. Writing context growing transphobic discourse both the mainstream media and public sentiment, we examine learning journeys six sport reporting on weightlifter Laurel Hubbard’s Tokyo Olympic Games. The reveals variable reflexive considerations; ongoing efforts educate themselves, colleagues readers; varying levels care sourcing practices (i.e., members community; scientists anti-trans groups); considerations about their responsibilities amidst rising online abuse. Engaging with recent writings journalistic ethics reflection-in-practice, this offers an example possibilities for responsible issues social political importance.
